Description
The poinsettia has a very interesting floral structure. The red bracts are modified leaves, not petals. The yellow structures are nectaries. Now comes the fascinating part - the poinsettia has male and female flowers gathered together in bunches. The males flowers consist of a single stamen which produces the pollen, and the female flowers consist of a single pistil, which will produce the seeds. There are no sepals or petals. This structure is characteristic of the genus Euphorbia, and is found nowhere else.
